Athiesm is the affirmative belief in the non-existence of God. It’s not just saying you don’t have evidence in God so therefore you don’t have reason to believe in God. That’s agnosticism.
Atheism and belief in God are both equivalent to sitting in a room in the house and declaring affirmatively that something is or is not in a room somewhere upstairs that you’ve never been in. Agnosticism is saying “how the fuck do I know what’s in that room? I haven’t been there.”
rf, I thought it was very beautiful what you wrote about your daughter. Also regarding the matter of perception and belief, if one did not have some perception of God, some experience of God, belief would really be almost irrevelant. I am not talking about the active state of believing, i.e. “I” believe this or that, but actually a passive state in which we are being touched or engaged, something to which we respond. I think the experience of wonder is part of that.
bfarwell- reality does have rules- to a point. Just ask a theoretical physicist. Things can get very hinky. I think I come from the wait and see school of agnosticism. I don’t think the knowledge of the human race even scratches the surface of what there is to know about the universe.
Thanks, Etson. I don’t know if I could have written that and conveyed my feelings about her that way if I had written it at 7:30 when she came home after chorus, her current grumpy self. I guess there must be a purpose to the fact that a parent has many years of love in the bank before they become teens.
lech- actual reality that has rules, rather than mystical reality, where rules don’t apply and anything can happen. The difference between gravity (rules) and god turning you into a pig and back again (no rules).

this firefox window, btw, is blocking my schedule C. sigh.
ah, dibs, I still miss my first car, a lovely aspen green 51 chevy. to quote someone else, ‘looks like a fish, moves like a fish, steers like a cow.’

“Why would we want to go to heaven? None of our friends would be there!”
Snort! Yes, yes! My mother and I decided that we were going to Hell, but we wouldn’t be lonely! : P
