“while we’re busy cofiscating all the wealth of those thousand annoying billionaires, does anyone care to tell me how this will even begin to eliminate the trillions upon trillions of debt being racked up?”
Can you explain how NOT confiscating it will begin to eliminate…
Gotta start somewhere. If you eliminate inheritance taxes, you have to cut spending by an equal amount.
“how do you know they arent robbing banks on the weekends?”
MM and bxgrl, the infamous bank robbers, were captured at the Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn at Albee Square. After entering the bank and handing the teller a hand written note, the duo stood looking up discussing the Corinthian columns and detailed ceiling while security surrounded them.
dibs is making this up. I argued for a small pass-thru and various exceptions.
But it was really a theoretical argument.
If conservatives really and truly believe that America is a meritocracy, and that a being a true meritocracy is what keeps America great, then shouldn’t we all start with nothing and let pure merit determine where we end up?
Of course in the real world this would never happen. But isn’t $2 million enough? Yet the repubs have managed to change the name to ‘death taxes’ and call for their total elimination.
May I just add one additional point,
while we’re busy cofiscating all the wealth of those thousand annoying billionaires, does anyone care to tell me how this will even begin to eliminate the trillions upon trillions of debt being racked up?
A lot of good it does cutting the head off a cobra when it’s already bitten.
BHS,
I also believe it’s not entirely this or that. This is why I’ve repeatedly stated that as a wealthy nation we are obliged to take care of the poor.
My main point is to underline the nature of the system we are working with and why it works.
The better to explain why alternative forms of government and economics don’t work. Repeating the mistakes of others, no matter how well intentioned they sound, is not a route we should be contemplating.
“During these past three decades, as we’ve seen the world grow in population by another 2 billion souls, would you not agree that the standard of living has been elevated for humans on this planet?”
It’s not a fair fight if you point to globalization as helping other countries. Obviously it is. On the other hand, it has thrown alot of americans into poverty (by our standards). First and foremost we should worry about our own. A country is only as good as the way it treats its worst off.
this is how i see things happening nowadays:
– unemployment is high
– lower tax rate so companies can create jobs
– companies continue to ship jobs overseas.
and sorry – “retraining” someone to work in a diner is not a good enough solution.
I was in the office yesterday and someone opened the freezer, which I never do, and there were two turkeys inside. Some vendor gave them to my warehouse guy, who’s on vacation.
did I miss much today due to my long boring meetings?

Doesn’t add up to me.
