I guess my point is that in the Middle East, the US has never had a real strategy that was not directly linked to Isreal/Palestine.
Almost everything we have done has been reactive or tactical.
About the only long-term planning has been an increase in our ties to Saudi Arabia and the smaller Persian Gulf states, but that has been a reaction to Iraq and has been largely limited to military bases and supply infrastructure.
