M4L – back in the Afro days the bi-racial kids I knew had Afro inferiority complexes. They all had floppy fros. A “righteous” afrow stiff and perfectly round.
With all the bs I used to go through with my high maintenance hair, even in the Age of Aquarius, I was jealous of black people who had these Afros which I imagined just “happened”. It was NATURAL, so how much work could it be? I expressed this thought to a couple of women I worked with at the time. They just looked at one another, smiled and said um, no.. that’s not how it works. They KILLED themselves to have these perfect huge halos.
BSM, the reason I like those floppy fro on kids is when they’re running around, jumping up, etc the fro movement is very cute to me. but I love the big stiff fro’s too. I like perfectly round ones but prefer the slightly less round ones more
Biff, the timing was extremely unexpected but I can’t say I’m surprised. Journalism is disappearing.
Jessi, that is so nice of you to say. Of course I’d LOVE to write/edit/manage Brownstoner — what do I do all day long already? It would be a dream come true. But I do believe that job is already filled 🙂
BedstuyMaven, it was a pleasure to meet you too. That is so funny about the potlucks. Also your post about East Cupcake was hilarious. I would love to see you again soon — maybe coffee in the nabe? (The huge nabe. But I can take the A/C.)

A friend I were just talking about this two days ago. He had floppy fro and had an Afro inferiotity complex.
We even had a song we would tease people with.
“Hey, hey what’s the matter with itfro it won’t grow into a natural. Come it with some grease
Not the same place my daughter goes. Even though her place charges 3x more, she said mine is too declasse because they sell water and luggage in front. Hers is very cool, big place with a bunch of metrosexual Malaysian Chinese working there. They all went over and expressed their admiration as the guy blew it dry after all the coloring was done.
BSM, not the same. I actually like those bi-racial kids’ big Afro’s the most. it’s that exact blend of big, not too tight, soft and light. that’s one of reason why I let my kid’s hair grow out but my parents always itching to get it cut.
