China (including Taiwan since 2009) uses a romanization scheme called Pinyin. It uses roman letters with diacritical marks to indicate tone. It is now taught in public school in China and is often used to spell Chinese names in foreign publications and as an input method to enter Chinese characters (hanzi) into computers.
Taiwan used to use a completely different system called bopomofo, using characters to represent each sound.
