“if we evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys”
That’s actually pretty easy to answer based on well developed empirical observations. A single species can branch out into multiple species and the original species can still exist.
[I can recommend a really good lecture on the process of speciation if you want….]
Dave, that’s part of it for sure. And also I don’t want to have to always make enough money to support a family, but yeah, those reasons aren’t what tipped the scales.
“Bullshit. Absolute and complete bullshit. Absolutely nothing about the theory of evolution is inconsistent with the theory that the process, from the earliest steps, all the way back to the ooze, was “designed.””
OK, but it is a bit misleading to use the same word — “theory” — to describe both evolution and the idea that there was a “design.” The former is a scientific theory, with data subject to testing and interpretation, and the latter is more theological. That is not to say the latter is wrong, only that, ultimately, it is a matter of faith and belief, not science.
And there are many places one could fall on a continuum with godless evolution at one end and full divine intervention on the other. Did the universe and all its physical laws and mechanics just happen? Did god just wind the clock and let it run, setting the physical laws of the universe in balance and letting them run? Did god provide a divine spark that gave the first bit of life to the primordial soup? Does god make decisions along the way, i.e., rhinos and homo sapiens, yes, mammoths and neanderthals, no)? And you can go all the way out there and say god made the whole historical record up, as some creationists seem to think.
Also Jessi brings up a good point. Sure the goo or soup or stew explains life on Earth – but why is the earth here or any planet for that matter? How did the planets and solar systems etc come about? gooo?
Jessi, when it comes to evolution I teach my kids what the best scientific thinking on the issue is. I always express it in terms of “scientists believe” and explain why it is they believe what they do.
One of the problems with this entire debate is that people seem compelled to seek certainty in an area where there simply is none. For some reason hue-mons have a lot of difficulty just grasping the simple concept that we’re just not sure about the early stages of the development of life on Earth. It’s that simple. We’re not sure. It’s also pretty much irrefutable that we’re not certain that there was *not* an element of “design” if you want to believe in that sort of thing.
“if we evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?”
EXACTLY?????????????????????????â€
Michelle Bachman got in trouble for this one. but yeah, Jackal fielded it before – a genetic mutation along the way is what fuels the evolution of the species. So it could happen again, it just hasn’t.
Excuse me, I have to resume my battle in the HOTD. Same crap…debating the cost of rehabbing with people who’ve never done it. Same as debating evolution with people with a BA degree.

What about when lech and Charlie Sheen evolved from humans?

JB, you dont want kids? dont buy it. you look good for at least 2 kids
“the ONLY alternate theory can be creationism”
