But Rob and Bxgrl’s point is essentially the same, in a closed market – be it a bodega that’s the only one in walking distance or a craft fair in Brooklyn Heights – pricing is in part based upon what the other stuff around it is going for. I would guess that Bxgrl could sell her art at a higher price in BK Heights than she could in Central PA due in part because she would be offering her work in the company of higher priced stuff. You charge what you can get away with.

I’m sorry they were killed, but they (foolishly) took a well-known and to my mind foolhardy risk.
Kens is right that they are different but the issue is just market structure, not sentiment per se.
Art and real estate need only one buyer and get sold to the highest bidder.
Run of the mill consumer goods need to be sold in large numbers, so average, not marginal, economics applies.

Kens, you got it flipped around. Randi is the one that things Knicks will be good enough and/or can get 3rd star. I think the team is better but not good enough and cant get 3rd star if Melo maxes out on salary
Oh come on Dave, you can’t have it both ways. You rag on Obama for the way he handles the budget, yet you want us to go out there and be policeman of the world. I think the Somali pirate killing of those yachters is horrible, but Americans are killed all over the world, for all kinds of reasons by all kinds of horrible people, and we don’t go out there “wiping them off the map”.
I also think Obama is going a decent job by carefully supporting democracy in the Middle East. Our relationships there are very complicated, and we have to do a careful ballet balancing the Arab countries and Israel. There are too many fanatics on all sides in every country, and you can’t just go in there like a bull in a china shop. He very deliberately stopped staffers in the State Dept. from endorsing Mubarak at the beginning of this mess, and saved the US from backing the wrong side. Also, public American endorsement of freedom usually mean that the freedom fighters can expect American aid and even soldiers. We can’t do that, look what happened in Iraq.
