  1. “Unfortunately my MIL is at the somewhat paranoid stage.”

Paranoia is part of dementia but it can be coped with, and she can still be helped.

But you CANNOT do this by yourselves. GET OUTSIDE HELP. I can’t say this enough. I have A TON of up-close and personal experience in this area, please believe me.

  2. “Benson – was the stepmother a true mom to your wife?

No easy answer to that question. My FIL remarried when my wife was 13. My MIL did the things she needed to do for my wife from that point on, in terms of taking care of the home, etc., but always with an air of obligation, not of love.

I’ve never heard her say one complimentary thing about my wife.

  3. Benson, I am so sorry. I am in a similar situation, with a demented stepmother, but at least my dad is still capable of most of her care. It’s not fun, and one of her children is estranged, one is totally incompetent, and the third is just waiting for the end and told my dad to put her away.
