You guys are talking about public assistance like it is still the 1980s. There are all kinds of incentives now, carrots and sticks.

Hi Snappy. I did not know that about the food stamps program.
And while it does count as bootstrapping, I am betting it is not very effective bootstrapping.
Kind of like trying to create the plays of Shakespeare by having a monkey bang randomly on a keyboard.
I consider myself very well off now, but I did not grow up that way. My mother and step father both spent years being unemployed, and calls from bill collectors were an every day occurrence. My wife grew up even poorer than I did.
While my immediate family was never on welfare or food stamps, I had many relatives who were, and some who still are.
I have no issue with government safety net programs. I think they are a necessity in civilized societies and serve a public good for all people.
That does not mean that there is not room for adjustments and improvements.
