The US has been subsidizing Colombian flower growers. In many cases they have been paid cash to switch from more lucrative, albeit illegal, crops.
This has upset the free market. It’s not that American flower growers can’t compete on a level playing field, it’s that US drug policy has fucked up the level playing field. That’s why the California growers are seeing an opportunity to get back in the game.
The irony here is that while you are against giving handouts to American farmers (as am I) we are giving them to Colombians. Is that rich or what?
