  1. There are also so many themes that you are talking about that the discussion is confused…… from the morality of abortion, to the limiting factors on abortion, to the Catholic Church’s teachings on human life, to the particulars of the case that started the discussion in the first place, which is that the Bishop took away the Catholic designation of the hospital and excommunicated the nun. The bishop’s actions will be discussed and argued in the church, i.e. that the only life that could be saved in that case was the mother’s. So there are a zillion things being discussed but not really discussed.

So there, I discussed it but didn’t discuss it.

    Can you stop now?

  2. DCB- I would not advocate abortions over 12 weeks actually. I don’t think there is any way to know when a fetus first feels pain- Legion might be able to answer that. The point still remains- what about the woman? And would you expect a victim of rape to carry a fetus to term? Or die if she can’t get an abortion for medical conditions?

  3. etson- that was what happened in the St. Joseph’s case. Both Sister Margaret and the hospital defied the Bishop. Sister Margaret was excommunicated, and the hospital was sort of excommunicated. The doctors all concurred if the pregnancy went to term she would die.

I do understand how strongly people feel about this issue and I understand how compelling it is. But I am just as strongly opposed to have someone else’s religious beliefs imposed on me, more so when those beliefs have tried to define when life begins to the point of pre-fertilization. It’s a terrible issue but the concept of “innocent life” biologically has no real meaning. That’s a subjective assumption- as a Jew, I don’t believe in the concept of original sin. And I am more agnostic than not. I agree there has to be time limits on abortions but I also believe that women are not to be treated as incubators. If we are expected to give up rights to our own being, what do men give up in return?

    And now, off to tea.

I have to agree with etson’s analysis of the abortion issue. It’s not something that you’re going to convince either side to change.

Actually talking about it is a waste of time.

I believe that people’s minds can be changed. But it takes an extremely serious attitude on the part of anyone involved with such a discussion, willingness to open ones thinking to really hear someone else and very careful discussion. I don’t think the OT is the medium to approach this.
