benson, I came from a family of collectors, and nobody threw anything out, so I have stuff going back to the 1800s. I actually sold off a lot of good stuff in my 2 moves.
But, I am also of the mindset that I hate to throw anything good away – I would much rather donate it to charity or give it to someone who can use it.
Lessons learned. Will NEVER accumulate stuff again. NEVER.
Yes M4L, that is where you can find good ROI properties.
I’ve been thinking of taking a trip down to Charleston,SC, because that area has a chance for growth.
Putting aside all the stuff I didn’t need at Costco and Home Depot, but bought anyway, by far the bulk of my excess “stuff” came from breaking up my parents’ and grandparents’ homes when they died. My sibs and I were in no position to make fast decisions at the time, and I then had a huge, empty basement so I stored most of the stuff. Now it’s been 4+ years since I buried my last grandparent, and I objectively know what I want and what I don’t, so I’m definitely in purge mode.
DCB, from family and friends down south (ie savannah, richmond, raleigh). apparently lots of banks down south GATE the appraisals at 10 to 12% cap rate off the triple net rental income – ie wont originate loan to anything with lower cap rate. Occasionally, one even comes across a 15% cap rate ppty
You know what I find amazing, and I see it often these days? Self-storage places in very rural areas, such as upstate NY. Maybe I’m wriong, but it seems to me that they’ve blossomed in very rural areas in the past 10 years.
I can certainly see the need for storage rooms in places where space is at a premium, like NYC and even its suburbs. Why is there a need for them in rural areas (I’m talking residential, not commercial)? Homes are pretty cheap and large too in these areas.

I am very anti stuff. The Mrs is very pro stuff. It’s a problem.
CGar;
I am headed for the same fate with my parents and mother-in-law. Both have houses with alot of “stuff”.

Slopey, what was best NYC song? Was it Billy Joel? NY State of Mind?
It was very refreshing to get rid of 15 years of accumulated “stuff” when we moved here from Los Angeles.
We still have way more than we need or use, but I have been working hard on not accumulating to much more.

Doesn’t make sense to me.
