He had never traveled outside of Hawaii and maybe California when he met my mother (since they got married they have gone to France, Italy, Syria, Jamaica, Australia, New Zealand, lots of other places I assume). His favorite food is SPAM, and not in an ironic way. He goes to church every Sunday. He does some sort of homeless outreach work for the Catholic church on the big island of Hawaii. And he’ll never, ever ask any questions, which is kind of the point.

You don’t see that with Spain and the Phillipines for instance or with South America. Perhaps it was the years of fascism that prevented that from developing.
