I think the Brita pitcher is a great convenience and water-saver. I only have to run the tap the requisite minute or so when I fill it up, and there is always nice cold water in the fridge. Just change the filter every 2 months.

Yeah – your building hovers over an area of the river filled with mutant eels, filtering seems like a good CYA move on the part of the landlord.
