I don’t have a problem wearing a baseball cap at a restaurant either, but depends on the restaurant – diner, casual place on Smith, it’s fine; someplace nice where you actually dress like an adult to go out, lose the cap.
Also, you can always take your hat into JJ for a free cleaning/steaming (which, for some reason, they call “blocking”). With proper care, a good fedora should last 10, 15 years, if not more.
