Point taken, DIBS- I don’t have the context of IRL knowledge; perhaps the banter is something so often done back and forth with a bunch of Japanese friends that doing it just becomes second nature and is obvious to the speaker that it is part of a shared ‘laughing at ideas of Japaneseness.’ But making fun of the Japanese to Japanese people feels different from making fun of Japanese people in a room without (internet being invisible, this is an open question) them.

    Making fun of Japan/etc (a rich comedic vein, no question) specifically in the context of Pearl Harbor and WWII also seems more aggressive.

    All that being said, I’ve fulfilled my token speaking-up duty, banter away.
