  1. “This is big government, Benson. It actually calls for massive government intervention into the sector (why not, it is one of our key strategic problems?)”

Did you read the same article that I did?!?!?! That’s not what it was calling for.

What they were basically calling for was funding by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, or something like that) for R&D into alternative energy technologies, so as to eventually make them competive with conventional sources. This is not big government, but SMART government.

I have been involved with projects that are funded by DARPA, and those by the DOE. The difference is like night and day. DOE projects are usually a joke. Often times they are politically motivated pork-fests, managed by hacks who don’t know what they are doing. The folks at DARPA, on the other hand, are smart as hell. It was DARPA (then called ARPA) that funded the R&D that developed the first internet (then called ARPAnet). It is DARPA that is currently funding the work into Supercomputers that I recently discussed. Total investment by DARPA? On the order of $1 Billion. Very few people know about DARPA’s work, which is a good thing. Keeps the political hacks away.

We don’t need cap-and-trade, we don’t need subsidies for the commercial deployment of technologies that are not yet ready for prime time, we don’t need global-warming scare-mongering. Simply fund R&D for alternative energy technologies.

  2. “I know most, not all, the bands. Dispropotionately British, which I suspect reflects journalistic bias rather than actual quality.”

  3. “Yeah, that’s him. I can’t believe he’s still around. The women would throw themselves at him thirty-five years ago.”

There are no real supergroups anymore.

    what do you mean?

  4. I just looked for that, Benson and if you are talking about the climate change discussion, yes, that is interesting, very interesting and I believe that 100%. However, Benson, it illustrates what I believe is essential about tackling these issues and that it has to be coordinated, very large scale, technology based and shepharded by government policy. This is big government, Benson. It actually calls for massive government intervention into the sector (why not, it is one of our key strategic problems?) and international cooperation on a governmental basis. And YES. Get it away from the smaller nations at the UN. G20, fine.

Then we can STOP talking about climate change, energy and protecting the environment as a function of patchy stop gap domestic programs (ethanol? In the US? please), fighting developing nations and the silly stance of individual moral purity that we see on Brownstoner ALL THE TIME — i.e. attacking climate change by riding bicycles, wrapping birthday presents in brown recycled paper, etc. You know, the list of completely useless individual acts of purity go on and on….
