why is it so surprising when gay person is ‘articulate’?
    that sounds so homophobic.

Pete, I seriously hope you are joking with your comment as I know you like to pick on me 🙂
but in case you are being serious -what I mean is how he had really been denying his own happiness in admitting he was gay by hiding the fact that he was indeed Gay from the world for the better part of a decade – how am I being a homophobe?

Dibs – what is a beaner?

  2. Politics is kind of like business. Sometimes you don’t really have any control over whatever you’re leading. So the key is to get in when things are bad and can only get better. You can take all the credit and look like a genius.

Bill Clinton got lucky starting in 1992.

Republicans might get lucky starting this year.

Though it will be awfully tough to re-create the forces that helped Clinton out during his term.

    We’ll see.

  3. While I do think that language shapes our perception of the world I also think there can be pre-verbal “ideation” otherwise pack animals couldn’t strategize as they clearly do.

“Those things are awful, in my humble opinion…” –
Dona, there is nothing humble about you. Opinion included.

Rats, Pete. I am working on it, the humility thing.

Generally speaking, the holidays with my family are something to “survive”, preferably unscathed. But the food will be really good.

  6. Here’s my reasoning as to why language came before fire.
And if I recall correctly anthropologists mark the use of fire as the start of Homo Sapiens.

    My reasoning is thus,

prehistoric man was constantly in danger from the environment.

The only advantage pre-historic man had against much
larger and faster predators was a form of communication.
If prehistoric man had fire but not language,
they would not be able to effectively organize against a
collective danger although they would have been capable of fending off an attack once in a while.

In the long term howwever, they would have been eradicated by a pack of lions or heyenas or most dangerous of all, wild dogs.
Fire, without language might have helped win a few battles, but not the war against predators.

We also have examples of other mammals that communicate
    but don’t use fire.

  7. ishtar… who really is worse tho… the real housewives of atlanta? jersey? the OC? NYC? werent they all really put on the show based on stereotypes and for ratings? i wonder tho if the atlanta housewives wind up getting more pigeonholed? the thing is that media is actually about 50/50 white / black these days with very few other minorities in the mix. yes you get the obligatory asian female newscaster, but other than that? not much. most other countries think that, based on the media alone from out country, we are about 50 percent black 50 percent white. which is totally strange! hispanics are the largest minority in america yet have the smallest media portrayal. there are more gay people in the media than which makes up for the actual population too. it’s such a strange thing, but kinda fascinating i guess.

i wonder if it’s cuz certain type of people are more media prone than others or maybe they just look better on tv! which i think is true. i think gay and black people, in general, are much better looking in front of the camera.
