  1. jester,
    there’s also a Hollywood version of Sherlock Holmes
    with Robert Downey and Jude Law,
    I watched some of it on cable. I like the sepia tone of the film, they also have great 19th century set design which is quite in vogue these days.

  2. Slopey;

    Nice try at a slight of hand. We are not talking about sacrificial lambs to the blogosphere.

    We are talking about news organizations that fire a journalist or columnist after they make an explicit opinion on a current topic.

    The fact that you and Bxgrl have not been able to cite an example of a righty media outlet that has FIRED a journalist under such circumstances underscores my point that none have occured in recent years.

    As IJ stated, it is the Left that is in a censoring mood these days. Not a permanent state of affairs, I’m sure. 50 years ago, it was the Right that wanted some folks hushed up.

  3. What I love most about the political discussions you all have here on the OT, and the reason I so rarely participate, is your nuance. It’s left or right, Fox vs. MSNBC, and never the twain shall meet. Pretty much sums up the political problems in the country now. There are no more statesmen, and few politicians trying to do what’s really in the best interests of the country, rather than in the best interests of their re-election campaigns. As a Democrat, I can honestly say I miss Bob Dole.

  4. CGar,

    I like Joe Scarborough, I used to listen to him on the radio with Minka Breszienski.
    I would watch them.
    I tend to like shows that challenge their guests and hosts equally.

    I like BBC news too.

  5. Did anyone watch the Sherlock Holmes updated for the 21st century on Masterpiece Mystery last night? Absolutely entertaining as hell. There’s two more the next two Sunday nights.

    What was weird is that in the books Holmes identifies Watson as a veteran of Afghanistan. and now, in 2010, that scene works perfectly still.

  6. I truly think it’s possible to be centrist in the media, but evidence everywhere is to the contrary that no one bothers try.

    I had a bunch of roasted almonds from Sahadi’s Saturday – yum!

  7. Bxgrl;

    If you want to insist on distortions of the truth, I’m calling you on it.

    Find the NR article where it states that Ann Coulter was fired. Find the article in NR where it explains the circumstances under which she left.

    Once again, you are peddling BS.

  8. “Hey, this was my daddy’s magazine and you have no right to criticize me”

    Actually, what seemed like happened is he tendered his resignation out of respect for themagazine his daddy built and the increasing conflict between his own views and the magazine’s. We’ll never know how much internal pressure he received befooe resigning. I don’t buy the NR crowd’s spin on it, and I only buy some of CB’s.

    Meanwhile — the right wing blogosphere whipped up a frenzy about Shirley Sharrod because of something she said. They accused her of not being fit for her position because, they claimed, she expressed a preference for helping black farmers and not whites.

    As with the lefty blogs and Williams, they ran with only half the remarks, and left out the redemptive part. But the righties in the Sherrod case had no more erspect for her “free speech” than the left had for Williams’.

    Like I said, I think the firing parties were wrong to cave to the blogosphere in both cases.
