  1. Dona — I was in Ireland a few years back, looking at a rural historical site not too far outside Limerick. The old caretaker started going on and on about Cromwell like it was yesterday. Kind of like old time Brooklyn folks and the O’Malleys only on a different order of magnitude. Burnt the roofs off of churches, etc. It’s a wound that won’t heal.

  2. donatella – thats in the context of the longer catholic versus protestant battles occuring in the British Isles back then – at one point protestants were being burnt at the stake, the next year it was catholics. Its not accurate to say the British outlawed the irish practicing their faith. (Not all Irish are Catholics btw). Oliver Cromwell was doing what you said – but he’d also just lopped the head of the protestant English King who had a catholic wife and dressed a bit odd. So he probably was a catholic.

There were plenty of English catholics being prosecuted later on when the protestants finally took over – most old country houses have a priest hole. Which isn’t what DIBS thinks it is.
