Hi everyone. Looks like it’s been a friendly, non-controversial day here on the OT so far. I’d like to keep it that way, but after yesterday’s OT discussion about “oreo” as a epithet, I’d also like to ask some questions if it’s not too sensitive a topic.
Is the heart of the insult, when used by one Black person about another Black person, that the person being insulted is somehow not genuine, or a traitor to one’s race, or “acting white”? When used by a white person about a Black person, is it akin to being “praised” for being “articulate” or something of that nature?
I’m genuinely interested in increasing my understanding, and mean no offense in asking these questions. And if Snappy or anyone else wants to respond that it’s not their job to educate me or other white folks, that’s perfectly understandable and I accept it. Otherwise, I think it might be informative all around if we can discuss a topic like this on this unusually diverse forum.
What is so interesting to me is that we live side by side but in virtually parallel cultures — but Black folks by necessity have to know all about white society, while whites can live their lives without ever really understanding much about Black culture unless they make an effort. I’m making an effort. Maybe we can continue to break down some of these kinds of barriers here in this unusual community that has formed on the Brownstoner blog. Thanks.

I went to a YMCA summer camp in the Berkshires. 4 weeks per summer. Lots of bug juice, camp songs, canoing, archery, riflery, kick the can, capture the flag, lacrosse, reveillie in the morning, taps at night.
Each Sunday we all put on white clothing and went to chapel, which consisted of split log benches outdoors next to the lake and a little podium where a chaplain would tell us some God stuff, which is odd, because a lot of the campers were New York jews. I made good friends with a kid named Brian Weinberg or Weinstein or something one summer and he complained to me once about how he shouldn’t have to go to chapel because he is jewish. I didn’t get it because I didn’t really know what jews were. I think I told him to simmer down and just enjoy the view and not get all hung up about it.

Donatella – well I guess I would prefer obama using his time to solve the jobs crisis in the US rather than make speech after speech energizing crowds

donatella, gold is a hedge for me and I’m up big on the position so this or even a 100+ pullback wont bother me a bit.
One should think about capital gains tax implications. You know with the democrats in power, those things only go up.
