  1. Dave, my friend gave me one of her Italian husband’s recipes for some type of Italian dish. It was 2 whole typed pages, single-spaced. I never did make that recipe. He would slave over the spaghetti sauce like a temperamental maestro at the Met, for 2 whole days. The tomatoes had to be egg-shaped! Oy, so much work. Then the dinner would be late. One time we waited – it was supposed to be at 7 pm – dinner still not ready. One expectant woman there went into labor, didn’t tell anyone, not wanting to miss the manicotti, cannelloni, etc. Finally after dinner, the expectant woman was driven to Manhattan (from Brooklyn) for the birth. The God-mother-to-be advised that the child be born in Manhattan and not forever carry the label of “born in Brooklyn”, for the rest of its life. This is all true!

  2. The differential in buying food at neighborhood bodegas or even the slowly improving MET on Fulton street to a place like Fairway is that it is so EXPENSIVE. (Thinking of Denton’s discourse on low income finance to Rob). In the Met, Amy’s soups are 3.99 a can (versus 2.59 at Fairway) or absolutly any canned food, any meat, fish (if you dare). In Yafa, sometimes I buy stuff (the corner bodega and they are actually cheaper than the MET) but off the charts more expensive compared to Fairway. Poor people get RIPPED off.

  3. Prez – Limelight was a “happening” place when I was there too. Bobby Dylan, Clancy Bros, Theo Bikel, Odetta, Oscar Brand, Logan English, many folk singers hung out there. Also people such as Michael Harrington, Ed Koch. Photographer Jim Marshall (died a week ago or so.) Kelsey’s wife, Judy Rutherford, produced at Circle in the Square next door – gave Bobby Duval his first big part. Then he was Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird & one of the lines about him in the film was, “He doesn’t like the limelight.” It’s a touching moment in the movie but a group of us laughed & got hissed at.

  4. quote:
Rob, you must never, ever get a credit card!!!!

well for what it’s worth every single time ive tried in the last few years i was rejected. my bank told me i can get one where i pay up front tho but i find that silly as what is the point? i know it’s to build credit but i dont believe in credit scores.

you cannot assign a silly number to someone’s lifestyle. it’s stupid and a mockery of the constitution.

I can eat for a week on $2.46. I’ll have really bad gas, though. Beans!

    I think Ishtar understands, Rob.
