“The government can’t create jobs, it wasn’t meant to do
that, it was meant to protect the private sector”
WRONG!!!!! That is the prime difference between the core philosophies of the Democratic and Republican parties.
The government was established for the PEOPLE, not the corporations, and the needs of the people, and the needs of the corporations often meet, but are not the same. They are usually the antithesis of each other.
When a stock soars in value at the news that a corporation has laid off half its workforce, that’s a prime example of how what’s good for business ain’t doing squat for the person on the street, by which I mean the average American worker, not the stock brokers.
That’s not to say a gov’t doesn’t do what it can to incourage businesses to come here and stay, but that is not gov’t’s main function. It is NOT the giant chamber of commerce. When a gov’t starts to think that all that matters is the needs and wants of business, over the mandated duty to the people it serves, then it’s time for a revolution of some sort.
“BLAH, BLAH, BLAh…typical line of crap. LARGELY MISINFORMED. HAL is not a Dubai company. It is incorporated in Delware which, the last I looked , wa sin the US and they pay US taxes.
Again, where do you people get your information???????
Send jobs offshore??? Exactly what do you mean??? If you are talking about HAL again, well, the rigs are largely “offshore.””
It was all over the papers @ 4 years ago, dibs. Maybe the didn’t follow through but it was posted. And no- I am not referring to just Halliburton. To large corporations in general.
Stop yelling- the all caps thing make you look like a child having a hissy fit.
Gennie cream ale? That’s what I drank in college. Gennie pounders (16 oz bottles). Still trying to take off the weight all these years later.
OK, in all seriousness, dibs, here is something a republican can like about Cuomo. For quite a while, he’s been talking about one way to reduce the state/local tax burden and cut costs that makes a lot of sense. There are hundreds of useless, redundant and duplicative local entities — unlike most states we have both strong town government and strong county government, and then we have villages, fire districts, school districts, sewer districts, water districts, all kinds of ad hoc districts and so on. As you know, this all costs money and we pay for it. He wants to do a lot of rational elimination/consolidation of a lot of these smaller agencies. We don’t need three levels of government plowing snow on different parts of the same street. Lots of savings to be achieved in streamlining governmetn this way. Biggest savings will be in local government costs and taxes, not so much State budget, but there are secondary savings to the extent some of these local functions draw down state funding streams.
I don’t call every conservative candidate nuts, or even most of them. Christie, for example, is focused, rational, and effective, even if you won’t find me agreeing with him much. Paladino just isn’t cut from the same cloth. And $1.4 mil tax break to create one job — is he a liar, a hypocrite or is he ready to commit to amputating the hand that feeds him?
Paladino of course is very much a part of it. has been big contributer over the years to politicians and receives $10 million a year from new york state for rent.
dave- i did. I like his track record- Paladino has no track record. All he’s done is make a lot of outrageous comments, tell us how pissed off he is and offered no solutions other than putting homeless families in facilities and teaching them hygiene. Another ignorant rich guy who thinks poor people are dirty. Go back and reading my answer at 1:23. If you can’t be bothered, stop insisting I haven’t answered- it’s there in black and white.
NO, YOU DIDN’T. What track record that is relevant to the governership???
And then, right on cue you start the rant again!!!!
See, what we need is a real Libertarian. Not the fake variety. Under a real Libertarian guvment, we could fix everything pretty quick.
-All troops would come home at once. No more war in Iraq or Afghanistan. Why do we still have troops in Germany, Okinawa, and everywhere else? We wouldn’t have to worry about terrorists since most of what they want is for us to get out of the middle east. That alone should take care of 20% of the deficit. You’d also be able to close down most of the CIA, NSA, and the rest of the spook guvment.
-No more foreign aid for places who don’t need it (sure, we could send money to Haiti and stuff for earthquakes). I keep hearing about how great a democracy Israel has. So let them figure out how to pay for it! Why are we supporting other countries when we have a deficit? And then we can stop paying off all of Israel’s enemies at the same time. (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc). That’s another few billion, and a another shot at peace.
-No more Medicare and/or Social Security except what people have put into it plus a insurance type rate of return, say 4%. THen kill them. That will drive budget into surplus pretty quick.
-Medicaid and some basic welfare should remain for people who really can’t work, with the emphasis on really. And as long as we’re at it, get the government out of the health care business by which I mean no more mandated treatments for docs and hospitals, let health insurance companies actually be free market.
-Disband all the nimby organizations and laws (environmental impact studies) that prevent people from building factories, let’s get the jobs back from China and then we don’t need unions. Build the mosque (it’s their property) and build whatever else anyone wants on their property.
-Then, with the nimbyists in full retreat, put the government to work at the one thing it’s supposed to be doing in a libertarian administration, besides defending the homeland, let’s build some infrastructure using the newly unemployed military. Fix the roads, fix the grid, build some nuke plants, build some new bridges, get the 2nd Avenue subway done this century. Big, bold projects like used to get done by the WPA and Robert Moses. (not all libertarians would agree with this).
You’ll have the money to slash taxes, pay back the deficit, see your doctor about an abortion, and have a gay marriage on the way home.
“And like MM, I say yes to getting rid of the abuses and overcharges. But let’s not forget, Republicans have sponged off the system same as Democrats. How many republicans voted no on raising their salaries?”
Too true. Paladino would be one of the first to stick his hand in the cookie jar, either for himself or his friends.
And it’s true, both sides are corrupt in their own ways.
cmu- good question. Or how does any sentient woman vote GOP or buy into the Tea Party?
DCB- don’t I wish it was that high. Nope. And I have them take out taxes too. Wouldn’t want dave and legion thinking I am a parasite on society. BTW- almost all of what’s left is taken up by rent.

legion,
it may seem crazy…but in this case that is the reality of the market. Supply and demand.
