  1. “”WHAT!? THAT’S MY BUILDING! I LIVE THERE!””

Haysus! The poor guy! He must have been out of his mind with worry!

PS, the water! the water! It must have been surreal! Thanking g*d I was in the subway.

  2. I haven’t even bothered to try and see if my tv will work. That roof that got blown off at 18th Street is *extremely* close to me and I suspect my sattelite dish may not even be on the damn roof anymore!

  3. Luckily it was just the roof over the air shaft of the elevator. One guy walking down 17th overheard when people there were telling me where the roof came from. He goes, “WHAT!? THAT’S MY BUILDING! I LIVE THERE!” He quickly hurried home!

  4. “Daily News say 1 person was killed and the winds were 100mph.”

Oh, that’s terrible. I hope there weren’t any other fatalities. Here in the North Slope, it looks pretty bad, as arkady and won ton have already reported. In addition to all the uprooted and cracked trees, a large stone apparently came down from the church on the corner of St. Johns Place and Seventh Avenue, and landed on a car. Thank god it didn’t land on a pedestrian!

I was relatively lucky. I’d left a window open, and there’s a rug and a window seat cushion that are both pretty soaked, but that’s the extent of the damage. A big branch came down in my back yard, from a tree two houses away. That wind must have been fierce!

Can’t get any news on TV, as cable service must have been affected — picture comes in and out, gets pixilated, then disappears.

  5. There were water lines, and sewer lines- some of those are over 100 years old. Not so much that they didn’t dig deep, but they were concerned with the tree roots running underground and breaking through the pipe. So the root ball stays high and close in. Also, I think some species are fast growing and they probably don’t have extensive root systems either.
