  1. My mother wasn’t a drunk by any stretch of the imagination, but parents in the 50s and 60s had a much more laissez-faire attitude about just about everything compared to parents today! She drank and smoked during pregnancy, fed us TV dinners and canned vegetables, let us gorge ourselves on twinkies and hostess cupcakes … and didn’t hover over us every minute of the day. We were out and about after school, getting dirty, sometimes getting into trouble, and basically learning from our own mistakes.

The mother in “Mad Men” is very much an example of this type of parenting, and while she’s portrayed as more neglectful than most, we also got a lot of that “go watch TV” or “go play in your room” instead of the one-on-one interaction that is the positive part of parenting today.

  2. I hear you Slopey, and I feel bad for the kids with the real allergies (though I have a niece who we’re pretty sure is a hypochondriac), and I was gonna blame the lawyers if you hadn’t beaten me to it.

But I agree with those who say that kids today have far more allergies than we did growing up.

And, dave, it’s funny, the more meds I’ve stopped taking, the better I’ve felt over the years. Stopped taking allergy pills, except on occasion, and my allergies mostly stopped.

  3. Wait…that child screamed for 40 minutes because they couldn’t get a candy bar? That’s another reason I can’t have kids. I would put a hurtin’ on a child screaming for 40 minutes in my presence. Unless they’re sick or injured, that is totally uncalled for.

  4. I sometimes wonder if parents feel the need to say that having kids is the best thing ever just so they don’t sound like jerks. Also, only once have I met a mother that admitted to loving one child more than the other.

  5. dibs, no but have been wanting to read that for a while. Guess I’ll pick it up for the plane ride Friday. You’ll appreciate that I’m heading to san antonio for a Quinceañera, should be a riot in more ways than one. BTW you can get bombed for 2 nights on a twenty in sa.
