  1. “The term african american is total hooey and I refuse to use it.”

I don’t see what the big deal is. Personally, I use it sometimes, when I feel it is appropriate, both in terms of self description or the description of others. Sometimes I don’t.

If you are looking for totally accurate names for anyone, not just black folk, none of the names we use for color are accurate. I am not black, nor you white, in terms of color, as in art or nature. We don’t call people yellow or brown, as they are neither, anyway.

It’s too bad we got on this color kick hundreds, perhaps thousands of years ago. The problem lies not only in the color description itself, but in the value and societal perception of what that color means in terms of a person’s worth, intelligence, beauty, etc.

  2. “Biff – It might be myth thats caught on because its an easier explanation than detailing that oriental became a term of abuse by usage.”

Ditto, I’m not arguing your points. I’m just saying that if a group of people claim they are offended when being referred to by a certain term, I respect that and won’t refer to them in that manner, especially when there’s a perfectly acceptable and preferable term available to use.
