im of the opinion that ANYONE can sing. it just sounds different to different ears. you cannot say one person can sing and one person cannot. that is total elitist snobby bullcrap. just because it doesnt sound good to your ears means nothing.
and i love MM has totally just borified music with fuddy duddy rules that need to be followed for it to be good :-/

A famous soprano of his day wanted to impress him with her skill and facility in ornamentation, and sang one of his most famous arias, I think it was “Una voce poco fa” from Barber of Seville, with way too much overblown fluff, ornamenting for days. He let her finish, and then said, “Nice aria. Who wrote it?”
