  1. I am reading a great book by Ted Sorensen, Special Counsel to JFK. It is a great reminder about how this country went through a lot of turmoil with the election of Kennedy, the first Catholic. Unlike Islam, the Catholic Church has a centralized source of doctrinal power and orthodoxy – the Pope. And the major opposition to JFK as a Catholic, was that he would be taking his orders from the Pope, a long standing fear among American non-Catholics. JFK kept underscoring how he believed and trusted in the Constitutional separation of Church and State, that he could be a practicing Catholic and an American. It was THE issue in the 1960 campaign. Eventually he was elected by a thin margin. But it was a kind of watershed in US history. We worked that one out in the public political sphere. There was a corrollary on the religious side as well. Shortly after this, Vatican II was taking place and out of the many updates/statements/policies, there was an official statement from the American delegation on religous freedom, which emphasized essentially the right of others to worship freely other faiths (there is a distinction between moral relativism and tolerance of the practice of other faiths).

I think we have this separation of Church and State thing pretty worked out here in this country. THOUGH there are some political elements in the US who seem to be pushing the limits of this again.

That’s not to say that a country cannot adopt a form of government which is is more theocratic in style if it works for them. There is an established religion in the UK and the Queen of Portugal is the Blessed Virgin.

  2. quote:
And I think he had another really moving post about an experience growing up in Section 8 housing.

we weren’t on section 8. one apartment was the flat out projects and the apartment complex we moved after that was income restricted housing. the difference between the two was actually astonishing.

the projects in general are fine, it’s the small gang presence / drug dealing in them that ruins it for everyone else living there. there was no gang presense in the projects when we lived there at the time (there actually is now tho) so it wasnt that bad. there was however a tad too much domestic violence for my taste, but then again that can be found anywhere.

  3. >seriously everytime i see the word mosque my eyes glaze over. so a majority of americans are against it. who the hell cares!

I’d say this is a sort of ‘out of the mouth of babes’ style remark, except that Rob’s a lot sneakier than that.

  4. Personally, I like a good POOP.

I’d prefer to do it at home, but on occasion I have POOPED in an airport bathroom, a friend’s bathroom, a office bathroom, and hotel bathrooms! OMG! Crazy isn’t it?! I SEEM TO POOP ALL OVER THE PLACE! LOL!
