  1. Regarding train service, it seems like it has declined miserably to me, but part of my sense is also that I moved from the 2/3 train in Brooklyn Heights to the C, which is the pits.

  2. History of MTA fares (full fare ride):

    $0.05 (1904 – 1948)
    $0.10 (1948 – 1953)

    $0.20 (1966 – December 31, 1969)
    $0.30 (January 1, 1970 – December 31, 1971)
    $0.35 (January 1, 1972 – August 31, 1975)
    $0.50 (September 1, 1975 – June 28, 1980)
    $0.60 (June 29, 1980 – July 3, 1981)
    $0.75 (July 4, 1981 – December 31, 1983)
    $0.90 (January 1, 1984 – December 31, 1985)

the union has nothing to do with MTA’s budget gap

Nothing? At all? I don’t know either way, but it would seem to me that wages and employee contribution to healthcare would have some effect on it, even if small.

  4. Denton, I guess the trick is getting there at opening time, and arriving with a list. If you do this as part of a routine, I am sure that speeds up the process. I assume you go on Saturday. Whereas in Kansas City, I would run in there all the time to shop AND you could also buy alcohol there, it was really worth the fee. The last time I went into 38th St, after not being there for ages, a manager pointed out (while I was waiting on line) that my card had expired. She gave me a wink and said stay on the line, you can buy all that stuff today without the card and then the cashiers started arguing with the manager and then they had to get get the big manager who lectured me for some reason….well…..it wasn’t too much fun.
