Legion, I think you did the right thing. You assessed the situation before making a dumb move (like calling the cops on a family that did no wrong). Hard to criticize if you weren’t there, and growing up in ENY I for one would respect your street smarts.
Never understood why recounts take so long in the US. In the UK votes are counted overnight and the following day and recounts done straight away. Counters usually just work through the night in this scenario.
Latest any final result comes in is late afternoon the following day. Paper ballots counted by hand.
Remember one result being challenged in court, court ordered another election which produced a clear winner.

I also find it amusing that he thinks that there was just one bedbug in the laundry room and no others anywhere else in the building. I can only imagine the lengths he’s gone to to make sure all holes are sealed (nh).

I would. But I’m not a cop, which really is whom I believe you should have called if you were genuinely concerned, regardless of the inconvenience. But that’s just me.
