  1. Hi Dave,

To tell you the truth, to satisfy my taste for Hiyashi ramen, I would go to Menchenko Tai just up the street here. And ishtar, I have been going to Omen for 20+ years and in my humble opinion, it sucks now. The food is still pretty good and you can get all those noodle dishes, but they are assholes there now.

The way I got to know that restaurant is that it is the sister restaurant to an awesome noodle place in Kyoto. I went to the one in Kyoto first in 1983. It was amazing and they told me about the one in NY. I then started going to the one in New York and it was like heaven. The food was SO GOOD and they were so nice. All the staff was from Kyoto and were students or something here – just here for a while. I would go with Japanese clients and others and they would set me up to show off my Japanese, let us get drunk in peace (or actually clients, me NEVER ha) and even put up with Japanese client singing at the top of his lungs in the back after a lot of sake.

THEN IT GOT POPULAR. I had celebrity sightings –sat next to Madonna and Liza Minelli once. And saw David Byrne of the Talking Heads,” which was exciting for a minute until the staff realized the my clients and I were not celebrities, then all the sweethearts from Kyoto went away and they hired creepy little celebrity sniffing people and the whole thing, my little love affair with OMEN fell apart. I was brokenhearted. I went 2 years ago and the food was still good but the service fell apart and the prices skyrocketed!!!
