  1. Donatella, that’s uncalled for. Any halfway decent place uses sushi rice. Only the best Japanese restaurants will ever use fresh wasabi though.

Also, the way to tell the real quality of a Japanese place is how good the pickles (oshinko) are.

  2. In Japan, in most good sushi places there are no prices listed. If they hate you, they charge eye-crossing prices and you don’t come back. (Strategy for dealing with some “foreigners” they don’t like) When I was living there, there was one place my friend (lady) took me to and they fell all over us, “try this” try that” and we ate everything. In fact, I remember being completely stuffed. The cost of this food in this fancy dancy place was 1500 yen which at the time was about 10 dollars for the both of us combined. My friend showed me the bill, which was basically a free meal. The message was “we like you, come back”.

  3. Dave, I just took a few pieces of makisushi out (just a few apetizers.) I didn’t even get to the fish. The rice is simply not sushi rice. Literally sushi means vinegared rice and so the real mccoy rice has a tangy/sweetish taste.
I’ll go there for a meal but I wanted to go in, say hi/welcome/etc. and just have a taste of something since I had eaten and was on my way somewhere.

  4. dona, pops is fine. Just faulty device. The Drs are just amazed he’s still kicking. They would have done this last year but was sure he be dead by now and didn’t want to do unnecessary surgery on an 85 year old.
