Arg, this police helicopter has been circling above our house for hours. So annoying. Only in Bed Stuy! (And East NY and Brownsville.) I hope they are catching some very important criminals.
Cobble – if you’re seriously interested, you can make the cut. Most people I went with had nothing more than a college degree and zero work experience! No required language skills either!! And sure, probably a bit more competitive now than in 2000 but you have real business experience and an application that would stick out.
Look at this – not that you’re anywhere close to 50 – but still, they want people with experience, not just a bunch of snot-nosed kids:
lechacal, if you’re still here (or if anyone still here has his email) can you email me? I have your address somewhere but I’ll never find it. Time to make a PLUSA-address book! robyf aol Thanks!
jessi, I haven’t actually started the crack habit yet. I have to find a dealer first. And then I’ll have to start mugging hedge fund asshats on their way home from work. : P
One of the major hurdles in this job hunt compared to years ago when I would easily pick up temp/freelance work to tide me over is that you don’t get to SPEAK to a human. You fill in a form online. Years ago, you put on a suit and you went over to the temp agency and you met with a human. The human reviewed your skills and figured out a spot for you. Now, you fill in a form online with past company, salary, etc. and you get SILENCE. It’s impossible to explain to anyone that hasn’t been unemployed recently. So really the only way to actually connect with a job is through a human you network with. Then there is the issue of having been unemployed for so long. Did you know that some companies are blacklisting anyone unemployed? Yes, it’s true. Some of them even post it on their ads! Hoo-ray! Only hire people that are already employed! Brilliant!
Cobble, if you dont already have solid skills with spreadsheet and database software, try to add those skillz as they’re usually very key to getting some temp gig. And it’s really not that hard to get decent with it.
if you want some pointers on what to brush up on, email me.

that’s how I got a ton of work back in college days and early on after college.

I looked at their site, jessi. They have a stack of requirements, of which I probably have some but not enough. I appreciate the idea, though.
I guess that’s a no.
Cobble, would you consider doing Peace Corps? I know I always push it and that you would miss BH but I think it would be a great experience for you!!

Cobble, that’s exactly the issue – freaking “over qualified” label is harder to shake / overcome than “under qualified”.
