  1. I can’t get excited about the World Cup. England is usually pretty bad in it & I don’t know most of the players any more. Plus there’s always some way in which they are hard done to by some cheating foreigners (e.g. Maradona’s hand of God goal, or the time the Germans doctored the English team’s food etc.)

  2. Your federal beuraucrats at work…

I just got my weekly newsletter from Washington Square West Civic Association in Philadelphia.

The city was planning to pave anumber of streets but cannot now. Here’s the federal ruling…”federal mandate that all newly- paved streets must include upgraded handicap curb cuts.”

The federal government was going to provide the paving money but not the money for the curb cuts.

And you wonder why people join the tea party.

  3. Actually, I find soccer to be a lot more fun than American football. Like basketball and hockey, it’s fast-paced and involves some actual skill (though I agree that enlarging the goals so that it’s easier to score is a good idea). American football has got to be the most boring sport on the planet. There’s a good reason it hasn’t caught on in the rest of the world.

  4. The Battle of Nations aspect is what I find appealing about the World Cup. Portugal-Germany: awesome. Spain-Brazil: awesome. Etc. Plus soccer is a fun game to watch because of the mood of the game. If you watch the game closely, you see how they’re constantly trying to set up plays and construct an attack.

I can always peek into a soccer game during some downtime because it’s weird and foreign and seeimingly always played in overcast skies.
