Donatella;
One of the guys whom I play cards with every week is retired from the FDNY, on – what else? – a disability pension. He is about 55, appears to be in excellent shape, and smokes like a chimney.
You know what his last position was with the FDNY? He was the chaffeur for one of the borough commissioners. A stenuous position, no? Yet, he swears that the department made him retire because of some type of heart irregularity.
There are a lot of stories like this.
This guy is my friend. I don’t blame him for doing this, if he can. As M4L has said many times, I want managers who will put an end to this type of thing. Hence, my admiration for Christie.
Rob, Do me a favor. Over the next few days, try to find somethings you enjoy doing. Try to live and enjoy life a little. Your fixations on all things negative must be exhausting.
Re Legion’s comment, I think that many of the protections that we have in the workplace are the legacy of the union movement and that some are providing vital protections for lower level workers who have had no protections, like the domestic workers union I referenced above.
That being said, the municipal unions are unbelievable. I don’t know how many fireman retire on disabiliity in NYC – but there is a large percentage and these people get these monster pensions till they die. Corporate entities CAN’T provide these kind of pensions, they can’t and remain competitive. (I wish they could).
oh. it’s just misters and sprinklers? nevermind, that shi+ is just lame anyway. for some reason i was under the assumption it was like giant water rides or something.
NJ also has a problem with it’s medicare fraud. Looked at my aunt’s bills this week and what she’s being charged for 3 hours a week of therapy nearly knocked me over. If medicare wasn’t paying for it you can be sure the prices wouldn’t be so high.

” The House of the Seven Gables,”
I haven’t read that since I was about 12, I wonder if I still have my copy? Now I want to read it again!

get a sprinkler cap from the Police Dept. and slap it on your fire hydrant.
oh yeah, im sure THAT would go over well where i live :-/ and it’s no fun with a sprinkler cap on it btw.

benson,
I finally finished The House of the Seven Gables,
while waiting at the airport this weekend.
It’s great reading the classics.
and I learned a new word for the “cat ladies” here.
GRIMALKIN
another word for cat, although with a slightly sinister connotation as used in the Hawthorne book.

Oh, puh-lease, your civil rights?! REALLY? Really, Rob?
Your sense of outrage is so misplaced! Go find a real issue!
Go find a city pool, a city beach, get a sprinkler cap from the Police Dept. and slap it on your fire hydrant. Just get over this! It’s absurd!
