Arkady, AFAIK it is in the nature of a common law adage, lost to the mists of legal and linguistic history. It has been attributed to Lincoln, but I doubt he originated it. I imagine Lincoln probably heard it countless times early in his legal studies. I think it goes back at least 200 years. It’s such a bedrock notion that anytime a lawyer learns of a lawyer representing himself, s/he will reflexively utter it.
Jinx, slope.
Your timing is impeccable, DCB.
Dibs, perhaps you were handling the case pro bono.
It was “pro bono” slope. And he was a pro with the bono.
“Congrats! Have you run into the dude that looks up to you and sought your advice on Friday?”
No, but I’m pretty sure I successfully talked him off the ledge and he isn’t quitting. I have serious moral reservations about how I handled that.
Yes DIBS, that was me. Still have them.
Dibs, how much were you billing him?
Needless to say, by briefs were rendered useless by the end of the discovery session.
Congrats! Have you run into the dude that looks up to you and sought your advice on Friday?
