OK, late to the party on this one, but a few observations on the mosque.
1. The site is privately owned property near ground zero, it is not part of ground zero. Apparently, the Muslim group developing the site bought what was formerly the Burlington Coat Factory building. The issue got attention when it came before the local community board, which gave its approval. Everyone is reacting as if this is part of GZ and some kind of government capitulation to PC. That is not at all how this arose.
2. That makes this largely a zoning matter. I think there might be First Amendment issues involved if some City entity were to decide that there can’t be a mosque at the site because it is “too close” to ground zero and would make people uncomfortable. I think trying to control the symbolism of what gets developed near, but not on, the former WTC site can be really dicey and we should be careful going down that route. It’s been hard enough just to get the memorial planned and the site going.
3. Whether or not the developer is a front for some Islamic militant group is a matter of national security and above the community board’s pay grade. Plenty of opportunity for Uncle Sam to figure that out before 9/11/11.
4. Everything Montrose and wasder said. I think there ought to be a fact-based reason for suspicion about the particular group before we start making policy and constitutional exceptions to block them.
Speaking of youngsters and their clothes…
Did you all see this?
