DIBS — The furloughs were not connected in any way to the *actual* budget situation. It was just Patterson playing politics. If he makes the emergency budget (“continuing resolution”) uncomfortable, then it would force the hands of the legislature to pass the budget.
But, guess what, Patterson is an idiot. He has no respect or authority in Albany… and the legislature is utterly dysfunctional.
There is a big difference between engaging the unions in collective bargaining (and asking for concessions because of fiscal distress etc.). It’s another thing to not take any effort to fix the MAJOR problems on BOTH the revenue and expense columns, but make a random decree of 20% across-the-board cuts.
DIBS — you know that across-the-board cuts are bad planning and a terrible way to do business. That’s what Patterson is trying to pull.

i know everyone likes to poo-poo them, but im excited for the 5th avenue street fair this weekend. they are usually fun for what they are. the weather is supposed to be gorgeous.
How much worse will it be if the state can’t send paychecks out one week?????
This is the real world, folks. The jackass union leaders can’t lose face by offering that everyone take a 4-5% paycut so you get the furloughs instead.

Just like the MTA, no salary cuts so WHOOOOSH…a few hundred station attendants get canned.

I agree with you that there should be a relationship between rents and prices but don’t know where you get the 10x that you often cite.
