“they would rather take someone who isn’t a risk of bouncing once the market improves to get more money, because they are working in a position they are ‘over qualified’ for.”
Agreed, DH, I think that is part of it. But dammit! : P
” At the moment I leave all that off. Regardless, I get a lot of …. ‘…this position is too junior for you’.
I’ll be the judge of that — I want to say!!”
A friend of mine works in HR – and their rationale behind the “too junior” thing is:
– they are trying to hire someone for the long term. they realize the job market is rough and there’s alot of people out their looking for work. they would rather take someone who isn’t a risk of bouncing once the market improves to get more money, because they are working in a position they are ‘over qualified’ for.
i don’t really agree with it – but it does make sense.
cobble when they say that, you should definitely tell them that.. that’s been thrown around a lot lately because they know they can get people fresh out of college to work like indentured servants.. i mean it’s understandable, but still, really tough for seasoned people trying to find new jobs. also age discrimination is RAMPANT in the private sector.
I know, CGar, but I do have one resume where I have all those dates [to help me!] and take it as a cheat sheet for HR types. At the moment I leave all that off. Regardless, I get a lot of …. ‘…this position is too junior for you’.
“It’s also the case that admissions are not necessarily correlated w/ merit”
Arkady, I’ve never been able to figure out the admissions process. I got into UPenn, but wait-listed at Tufts. Made no sense to me then or now.
As for dates, cobblehiller and delepp, my recent background check asked for exact dates of high school, college and law school graduations, among other obscurities, long since forgotten, and I was lucky if I guessed the correct month. May? June? Who can remember?
But it’s true that anyone would bounce for a better/higher paying job.
What happened to raunch hour today?
Well, standardized tests are perverse.
i hear ya chiller!!

Thanks, Rob. As one headhunter said to me recently…
They’re hiring lots of young people…at some point they’ll realize they need some “grown-ups”! LOL! [G*d, I hope so!]
