  1. Snappy, I would also strongly suggest to your friend that he buy a book, or do some on-line research on self employment. As BRG said, there are lots of deductions available, some pretty obscure. There are also a few payments that are owed besides the basic income tax, like social security, self employment taxes, city taxes, etc lurking in the bushes to take your last dime. I don’t make a lot of money, compared to most here, but one of my best investments is my accountant, who has saved me from myself many times. I turbo taxed my returns a couple of years, and in my cheap ignorance, paid for it. Fortunately I didn’t own my home at the time, or I would have really screwed it up.

  2. Geez, someone is finky and moody!!
Why don’t you have your TV Dinner now, it’ll make you feel better to have something on your stomach.

  3. Thanks Mopar. I’m going to tell him to go through his bank records and try to determine the final amount he made from that job (it lasted several months and it’s sure to be over $300). He told me the employer who owes him the 1099 is being a dilweed and refusing to hand it over (which makes no sense, but oh well). I don’t know what that’s all about, but his main concern was whether he would be able to file without the actual document. He doesn’t seem to think he can get his former employer to give it to him by April 15th so he’s been getting antsy.
