  1. I have mixed feelings about the whole new contract. It is 10% over 4 years which is kind of better than the last contact which called for 3% annually so it actually is not a deal breaker. See I am kind of with Benson and DIBS on the whole Union thing. I am not against people getting together and striking because they don’t have fair working conditions or fair pay for their work. I know Nurses at Sloan Kettering are not union and were abused so they got together and went on strike and their demands were met because they believed that they weren’t providing quality care as they had too many patients to cover per each shift and that hospital should hire more nurses for shifts. Hospital caved.

My problem is with Unions demanding things even when majority of union members are not happy to go on strike about. This was the case with some people I know in MTA and this was the case with our building super and porter. They were fine with working and having a couple of year salary freeze as they realize that this is the current economy. The only thing that our super was upset about was that the new contract called for elimination of senority which he didn’t like, not the other demands. He is obviously happy now cause he gets to keep senority, get another week vacation soon and get a pay increase but he still wasn’t willing to strike and I think that goes for all hardworking common-good thinking union workers.
