  1. NOP — You’re right. It’s the doormen. They define a neighborhood. It is funny though, NY Magazine named Park Slope the best neighborhood in the city and there are about 12 doormen in the neighborhood. And contractors still make repairs, deliveries are made and children are “tracked.” (though I’m concerned about that last one… not sure why the doorman is involved with childcare). There are also no doormen waving at neighbors or hailing cars.

Interesting though, eh? I guess it’s a different “ballet” that doesn’t need a STAFF for the performance to happen.

Sorry. I know the value you see. And obviously you are very happy paying (quite a bit) for this service. I just find it silly and to talk about the doormen being “integral” to the city and part of the “ballet” is just TOO much for me. *Integral* means something a lot more to me than “something that smooths the edges of well-heeled folks’ lives.”

  2. “Just ask my brother. His doormen are terrible. And he’s in a pre-war Gramercy Park building.”

That supports my point. Most doormen are nothing special and have a relatively easy job.

  3. dh, so far I’ve just eaten the specials that they have. Pork last time and it was delicious. The cocktails are super as well. I stick to the “Martinez” but friends had the old fashioned and tom collins.

“W” also monitors contractors in the building, oversees deliveries to and from the building, schedules resident requests for services, arranges with other staff to help with packages, keeps track of children, etc.

And as for the “ballet” of a neighborhood. What do you think helps make neighborhoods neighborhoods, and makes them — not just buildings — pleasant and safe?

  5. and yeah – biff is right too. the majority of doormen in rental buildings don’t do much (especially in FiDi/Murray Hill) – i used to waltz into them in my college hey-day and drink/smoke on their roofdecks. you would think if there was ONE thing a doorman should do is make sure hooligans aren’t utilizing amenities.

i’ve had pretty good experiences with the one in condos/co-ops, though.

my dentist is in a park ave co-op on the UES and he won’t even let me near the door before he gives me the 3rd degree.
