  1. Try living in Brasil…think they have about 378 names denoting skin pigmentation. But oddly, negro is not only still used but preferred.

But I think that has to do with Brazilians do not self-identify with collective racial groups; rather, they think of themselves as individuals and thus skin color is a very individualized thing.

  2. It would be impossible for me to refer to myself by my families original nationalities, I’m descended from 8 different nationalities, that I know of! I’m a mutt. An American mutt.

  3. Ha! I’ve got two brothers, and the oldest one gets the distinction of Big Brother Snappy #1 🙂

Lechacal, for me, I just say I’m black…not black american. BBS#1…I’ll have to ask him his reasoning behind “black american.”

  4. Uhhh, NO!! I’m with Biff and lechacal, with all due respect to Momma Snappy. (Hell, I won’t even call Snappy “My Black Lesbo GF” again!!!)

Snaps, tell your Mom that she and *rob* and I will have to discuss this during our weekly Sunday call. Also, ask her how she feels about Blue and Green.

  5. With that term there will be answers all across the board. I have friends who prefer to be defined that way. As I explained, I find it offensive for myself. There’s never an easy answer.
