Biff, after you reminded me, I walked through the park on my way home last night, too. It was mostly empty, though there were 2-3 CitySights tour buses dropping off tourists as I was leaving. I think Pier 1 is great, they did a beautiful job, and I loved walking along the perimeter, right by the edge of the river.
But I have a couple of questions. I assume you’re going to be able to ride your bike through the park eventually? The huge “BIKE” signs all over the site are undercut by the “DISMOUNT YOUR BIKE” sign in front of the bike rack at the park entrance.
And I didn’t get the kids’ park. There are 6 swings, and that’s all I found to play on. Are those big silver domes covered sandboxes??? And what’s with those 3 multicolored things that look like fire hydrants??? (Granted it’s been a long time since I’ve played in a kids’ park.)
Finally, I made the stupid mistake of walking home via Furman Street. Dark and desolate, I was just waiting to be murdered and my body left on one of the unfinished park piers. I’m sure One BBP has nice views, and, yes, it will be nice when the entire park is open, but it really is too desolate for me to actually want to live down there.
Btw, I walked through Pier One at the Brooklyn Bridge Park last night on my way home and it is wonderful. What an amazing addition to the neighbourhood and for all New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy. It felt very serene, which was probably due to the fact that almost nobody else was there as it was drizzling at that time.
I can’t wait for the rest of it to be built. The Champs will love the new water park being finished on the other end by Atlantic.
On a similar note, I just heard a bird that makes this wonderful sound — have no idea what bird it is…it’s “the bird that let’s me know it’s spring”! They’ve come back on their way north! Two long whistles followed by a 2-4 quick short ones. Any ideas?

Public school spring break starts Monday. Private schools are on spring break this week.
