Legion- one thing I learned about Obama long before he was elected is that he was always looking at all the alternatives. Why you construe this as him “finally” seeing the light I don’t know. But he has been far ahead of the curve- unlike the last administration. (Full disclosure- gratuitous dig at Bush 🙂
donatella,
true, the energy grid has severe deficits and is underpowered for growing need.
half our nation’s problems with war are linked to the lifeblood of industry, oil.
we happen to have larger reserves under the United States than Saudi Arabia but our politics is such that it cannot be touched.
for environmental and economic reasons, nuclear is the true solution, 3 mile island was human error and there exists a newer model, developed in the USA, which is safe and consumes the nuclear waste materials from older type reactors. No Yucca mountain problems of waste storage.
Finally, the President is beginning to look it it.

Nuclear energy can enhance the amount of electric generation available and its just part of the mix, but that is not our main energy problem. Our big issue is not power generation — we have plenty of coal, natural gas is plentyful and cheap and there are increasing amounts of new technologies. Our energy problem re price volatility, exposure to unfriendly foreign powers, etc. etc. is the petroleum sector/ i.e. transportation and middle distillates used for heating. Regarding transportation, we might talk about electric vehicles, but that requires a more robust transmission grid, which is our biggest problem in increased consumption of power. Of any kind. Wind, coal, nuclear….

Jester – That’s called a Foucault pendulum – there’s one at the Smithsonian too. The earth turns under it. You can buy toys that replicate the action.
Otherwise known as “tripping.”

Sounds like a job for Waste Management.
