Snappy;
I suggest that $1000 be spent to teach the morons who made up that mural some basic math.
The cost of a private university is about $40,000/year. To educate 924,000 students for one year would this cost about $37 billion dollars. If we want to talk about public universities, let’s cut that figure in half: $18.5 billion, still well over the $5.7 billion figure they use.
The cost for halth-care insurance is $900/month (that’s what I’m currently paying for my daughter). That comes to about $11K/year. To insure 1,000,000 people for a year comes to $11B/year, double the $5.7B they claim.
The defense budget is 25% of the federal government’s budget, not the 40% that the artist claims. The defense budget as a pecentage of GDP is about 4%. By comparison, it was around %6 during the cold war era.
Some stats, Snappy. I wonder if our national priorities will ever change. That’s not a Dem/Repub thing either, because all parties are actually locked into keeping the status quo, no matter how much either party says otherwise.
Groundswell did an interesting and well executed mural over here in Crown Heights North, directly across from Brower Park and the Children’s Museum, about gun violence. It too, had lots of disturbing statistics. The kids who worked with the artist and others at Groundswell were having a great time, yet were very serious about the subject matter. I think it’s a great program.
I was out galavanting today…from the P.O. to Lowe’s and on to the cute little 23rd Street house I wanted to see. On my way down 3rd Avenue to see the house, I came across a gorgeous mural painted on the side of a building between 22nd and 23rd Streets. After some googling, I discovered that the mural was done some time in 2008 and commissioned by the Groundswell Community Mural Project. In large lettering, it says “Arm Yourself with the Knowledge to Think for Yourself.” The mural includes many quotes and statistics. The one that struck me the most was the following:
“Taxpayers in Brooklyn, Borough, NY Will pay $5.7 billion for war in Iraq approved to date. The same amount could have provided 924,059 scholarships for university students for one year or 1,044,270 people with health care for one year or 32,189 affordable housing units or 1,978,787 children with health care for one year or 65,587 elementary school teachers for one year or 85,104 port container inspectors for one year. –National Prioritiesâ€
I got a pic of that part of the wall, but there are other flickr shots that have better views of the mural in its entirety. http://tinyurl.com/yfgpghr
A quote from one of the flickr pages on this mural:
“In an interview with The New York Times, lead artist Katie Yamasaki said, ‘They say there’s not a draft, but when they say they can’t afford to fund college because 40 percent of our tax dollars go to war, a lot of youths feel stuck.’â€

Slopefarm, I would like to join you for pool if I may. I’m working until 5 tomorrow and could get to wherever right after.
“Benson, we really killed this thread, didn’t we.”
I blame it on the three PLUSAs who went to lunch (DIBS, CGar and M4L).
Oh, and MM, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE “Windy”…The Association’s cd is among my prized posessions 🙂 I too recognized it immediately!
