  1. DENTON! OMG! freshman year of college in JERSEY these two chicks across the hall from me adopted me as their gay brother. they would drag me to the mall in paramus or menlo or woodbridge to go clothes shopping. in return they’d buy ME dinner and stuff. maybe they felt sorry for me or something i dont know. but anyway the point is that they would wear the clothes to frat parties on a friday and saturday night and then we’d go back to the malls on sunday and they’d return the clothes. tags and stuff STILL ON THEM!!!!!! they did this a LOT. i dont know if they were using febreeze or something (im not if febreeze was even invented yet in the late 90s) but still. that’s nasty. hahahah

  2. “Why should men pay for dinner? Do women not have jobs?”

OK fine, the serious answer is that a date is often step one in two people figuring out whether they are capable of having a productive long-term romantic and reproductive relationship. That relationship often involves a man supporting a woman and offspring, with the woman staying at home or taking on less demanding employment to allow her to be the primary at home parent. So you do a little dry run. The man provides food, the woman provides conversation, they see if they get along. Eventually they may reach another milestone symbolic of this type of relationship – the man buys the woman a really expensive but functionally useless piece of sparkly carbon for her finger. Just another demonstration of ability to bring wooly mammoth meat back to the cave. If these people pass all of the tests they move in together and reproduce, and if they’re lucky get old together and die happy.

There are plenty of other patterns. If another one works for you then good for you. For example when DIBS goes on a date he may just be looking for quick buttsex. If you have no interest in the kind of relationship I described above, then I guess those symbolic steps aren’t really sensible for you. Do your thing. Don’t judge.

  3. NO MAN WHO PAYS FOR DINNER IS EVER GOING TO HOLD IT OVER YOUR HEAD! unless they are a sociopath in which you dont wanna be with them anyway. jeez. there was SOOO much wrong with the 70’s, i think womens lib was in the top 10 list of things gone awry in that decade.
