  1. CarGar, I am not a hallway monitor, I don’t care what people talk about, especially on the open thread. Most of the time, I don’t even post here.

I also can’t speak for Cobble or Bxgrl. I am not picking on rob. I would say the same things I say to him to anyone else here, if they chose to make some of the comments he has made. No one drove Benson from the OT, he removed himself. Why would you think that Rob would be driven off the site by me? I do not object to his presence, just to some of his comments. There is a big difference. Why you, or Snappy? Because you are his friends? Please. This isn’t my blog, and I don’t have that kind of power, and neither do Cobble or Bxgrl. And I happen to like both of you a lot.

Yet we are all responsible for our speech, and if we choose to air our opinions here, then they are fair game for commentary. Perhaps us three lefties are a little sensitive to certain issues that we feel are not joking matters, such as Haiti, or poor people. We can defend those issues until no one wants to talk about it anymore, why not? I don’t have kids, but I happen to be offended by the term crotchfruit, as I was offended by the term sandy vaginas, which I know was not uttered by Rob. I’m going to say something about those issues, those phrases, in part because I consider most of the people on the OT to be my friends, and I can speak plainly and clearly with friends. While I don’t want groupspeak, I don’t think it’s too much to expect basic civility, and with basic civility comes the expectation that certain topics, certain ways of saying things are either TMI, or better left said in private. Rob doesn’t know how to do that. He should. Most of the time, I ignore it, sometimes I can’t.

He’s your good friend, and it’s admirable to come to his defense. Please continue to do so. I’m also going to stick up for my friends when I feel they are being unfairly characterized. When I choose to, I will also take issue with anyone’s positions that I find to be too outrageous to let stand without comment. It’s a matter of principle for me, and I think for Bxgrl and Cobble. I like joking around with the best of them, and enjoyed this morning’s Yiddish Fest tremendously. But when the topics get serious, then I take them seriously.
