  1. cobble, just ignore my opinions from now on. clearly everytime i state something you seem to a have stroke, it cant be healthy. okay fine, so there’s an international relief thingie.. that’s cool.. you learn something new everyday i guess!

  2. “Gem, I just don’t believe in helping anyone before you help your own. ”

snappy, your conservative side is showing!

I’d agree with you except… we are already ‘helping’ the Iraquis (do you know how many buildings we have built there?), ditto the Afghans, and then look at the countries around the world we are propping up with billions in foreign aid, military aid, almost everything but humanitarian aid. Israel, Egypt, massive increase in aid to Yemen just announced.

  3. “did other countries help with katrina? no”

Ummm, *rob*, lots of other countries sent aid to New Orleans after Katrina. I even seem to recall Cuba offering to send aid, including a desperately needed hospital ship, but the Bush Administration turned them down. Very mature. We have diplomatic relations with Vietnam, but Cuba remains a pariah. I actually want to travel there before the embargo is lifted – I here it’s great from friends who have gone via Mexico.

  4. That said, the wiki piece also offers this:

    Actual Funds Used

An article in the April 29, 2007 Washington Post claimed that of the $854 million offered by foreign countries, whom the article dubs “allies,” to the US Government, only $40 million of the funds had been spent “for disaster victims or reconstruction” as of the date of publication (less than 5%).[49]
Additionally, a large portion of the $854 million in aid offered went uncollected, including over $400 million in oil (almost 50%).[49]
