We’ve only got one more post scheduled for today and then we’re going to take a much-needed break from blogging for the week. But, have no fear, the lights will stay on around here: Montrose Morris is going to take over next week as guest blogger in residence. There won’t be quite as much content as usual but there will be plenty to keep everyone busy. Have a great Christmas and New Year!

  1. About the Chinese characters, yes, Japanese borrowed them from the Chinese in the 8th Century with the arrival of Buddhist monks and gradually the Chinese characters were superimposed on top of the Japanese language (which has a very different structure). But then there is hiragana, which is the phonetic alphabet of Japanese words (The “Tale of the genji” is all in hiragana, also because it is written by a woman, and they never got to be the elite learners of Chinese). Then the best is katagana which is a Japanese phonetic alphabet for foreign words. So if you can read katagana, you can read English words with a bad Japanese accent and order from any fast food menu. Oh, and the Japanese can’t stand other Asians and other Asians can’t stand them.

What am I talking about? Im going home and a Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukah and Kwanza and everything!!!!

  2. Besides, it is never good to start basing politics on someone oppressing or invading your possible ancestors lots of generations ago.

I still hate that bastard Cromwell!

  3. ‘sup peoples? How much should I tip my Super? I’m really out of practice from my days with 40 building people to tip. He’s really nice, but I’m really, really low maintenance. Ugh. I’m happy to tip. I always tip very generously. But I always agonize over the amount.

I was told that your annual total tips to everyone in the building (super, doormen, porters etc) should be between 10-15% of your monthly rent.

  5. Arkady, I had to blink stupidly at that a few times before it made sense… probably my English blood.

And I married an irish prod — they have an interesting perspective on this sort of thing.

But mostly, I just look at the size of the UK, and the way everyone kind of looks like their cousins, and assume that they’ve all been intermarrying for thousands of years and while regional differences and accents are interesting, they don’t mean anything.
